What is the current interest rate on NSC in India?
National Savings Certificate (NSC) offers 7.7% p.a. for Q1 FY 2026-27, compounded annually but paid at maturity. The rate is reviewed quarterly by the Ministry of Finance.
Is NSC eligible for 80C tax deduction?
Yes. The amount invested in NSC qualifies for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per financial year. Additionally, the interest accrued each year (except the last) is reinvested and also qualifies for 80C within the same cap.
What is the lock-in period for NSC?
NSC has a fixed 5-year tenure. Premature withdrawal is allowed only on the death of the holder, court order, or by a gazetted Central Government officer (security purposes). There is no partial withdrawal facility.
Is NSC interest taxable?
Yes, the interest is taxable at your slab rate. However, because it is deemed reinvested, the accrued interest for years 1-4 qualifies for 80C deduction in that year, giving a tax benefit while the final-year interest is taxable on maturity.
Where can I buy NSC?
NSC certificates are issued by India Post and can be purchased at any post office in India. Minimum investment is ₹1,000 and there is no upper limit. Can be held individually, jointly, or on behalf of a minor.
